In 1990, permitting regulations were developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Among them, The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) regulates the stormwater discharge activities of Energy and Power Generation Facilities under Sector O.
A variety of BMP options may be applicable to minimize or eliminate the presence of pollutants in stormwater discharges from steam electric generating facilities, including coal handling areas. You may be required to implement engineered structures that treat stormwater runoff and/or mitigate the effects of increased stormwater runoff peak rate, volume, and velocity.
