A U.S. Air Force Reserve Station in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was concerned that heavy metals, including lead and copper from spent ammunition rounds was being washed by stormwater runoff into a nearby waterway. To address the risk, the U.S. Air Force hired Hillman Environmental Group, a nationwide, full-service environmental consulting firm, to recommend a passive stormwater treatment Best Management Practice (BMP) capable of removing these toxic pollutants and protecting the environment.
Staff from Hillman Environmental Group considered a multitude of options before specifying a StormwateRx Clara® 25C Plug Flow Separator. The Clara was selected for its unique ability to settle particulates, including heavy metals, while preventing pollutant wash-out during large storm events. The Clara Plug Flow Separator was easily retrofit to the existing firing range drainage system, reducing the capital cost of the project.
Maintenance for the Clara is another benefit for the rifle range because it is owner-maintainable. The rifle range is able to use its preferred vactor service provider to perform the maintenance. All four chambers of the Clara are easily accessible by manholes.
With the installation of the Clara settling system, munitions particulates are being captured and the site is limiting its exposure as a target for third-party litigation or potential fines from the EPA.
Contact StormwateRx to find out how the Clara can help you meet your stormwater quality requirements.
