Bayside Boatworks

Specialized Metalimageimage

Bayside Boatworks is a commercial and private boat repair facility located on Richardson Bay in Sausalito California. To protect water quality, comply with its industrial stormwater permit, and to reduce concentrations of pollutants that could trigger a costly lawsuit by one of the many private citizens groups operating in California, Bayside installed an Aquip® enhanced stormwater filtration system.

Bayside services private and public vessels from 86-foot schooners to small skiffs in its waterside facility. The facility performs all facets of top-side and bottom-side work to recondition vessels. Boat bottom work includes power washing the hulls to remove accumulated barnacles, detritus and old paint, sanding and re-applying antifouling paint that discourages growth of materials on boat bottoms that can increase fuel consumption and shorten hull life. The hull reconditioning process releases fine dust particles containing heavy metals such as copper, lead and zinc. Copper and zinc are toxic to aquatic organisms; lead is a human carcinogen. At most boatyards, rain landing on the ground surface picks up the fine particles, dissolves some of the heavy metals and transports the pollutants into stormwater drain lines and adjacent waterways.

“We installed the Aquip filter because we wanted Bayside Boatworks to be recognized as an environmental steward, protecting the waterways in which our customers boat and operate. We’ve been happy with how Aquip works. The system is easy to operate, no chemicals, it’s just water in and clean water out. It pretty much runs itself.” -- Mike Linder, President, Bayside Boatworks

The stormwater filtration system at Bayside Boatworks is an Aquip 25SBE, which is sized to treat the 0.3 acres of boatyard work area prior to releasing runoff into Richardson Bay. The portable nature the Aquip 25SBE allows the system to be relocated if additional work space is needed. Aquip is an innovative, enhanced media filtration system for industrial stormwater applications. This stormwater treatment Best Management Practice (BMP) is a highly efficient system that provides the treatment needed to meet stormwater quality standards in a simple and easy-to-use configuration.

Aquip:

  • Removes metals and particulates
  • Uses passive filtration, no chemicals
  • Features an open top for easy access and operation
  • Operates unattendedAllows simple and safe stormwater sampling

Aquip is available in several performance levels, each specifically designed for the reduction of stormwater pollutants such as oils, suspended solids, heavy metals (including dissolved metals), organics, and nutrients.
